From the-memo-just-got-here department, this article on ONLAMP is particularly insightful in how it discusses the use of project management principles in OSS. I absolutely agree with the point made by the author, of PM usage in the workplace being more a case of “do it because we have to”, as oposed to “do it because its smart”, even though every manager I know at work will agree that its essential in delivering systems that meet client expectations. These same managers have said (to me), just like in the article – “lets try not to spend too much time on the [documentation|plan|requirements spec], since we have to watch the budget – heh heh.”. Frustrating. So take a look, think about how you can (quietly) introduce some of the methods and concepts discussed into your work environment, without the beancounters (and their minions) finding out.
